The Caledonia Warriors football team lost for only the second time in 53 games on their home field since moving to the new middle/high school complex a decade ago when they were defeated by Plainview-Elgin-Millville 17-3 Friday night.

PEM scored three points in the first period and seven in the second to build up a 10-0 lead.

The Warriors countered with a 30 yard field goal by Austin Goergen to pull within seven as the first half ended.

Penalties and two costly fumbles in the first half stymied the Warriors, as they only had three first downs in the first 24 minutes of play.

The visiting Bulldogs padded their lead in the third period with their second TD and extra point of the night for the 17-3 lead.

The Warriors mounted a sustained drive late in the third period, but failed to convert on a fourth and one from inside the 10 yard line at the 11:36 mark in the fourth period.

The Warrior defense stopped the Bulldogs on the next series, but a fumbled PEM punt gave the ball back to the visitors with 9:30 to go in the game. The Bulldogs were able to run the clock out for the win.

PEM had 12 first downs to the Warriors’ nine. Caledonia had four turnovers, while PEM had zero. The Bulldogs rushed for 100 yards and passed for 102 for 202 total yards of offense. Caledonia rushed for 169 yards and passed for 49 for a 218 yard total.

Kennan Bruening completed four passes for 49 yards. Adam Buttell caught one pass for 30 yards and Josh Lampert had one catch for 15 yards.

Ryan Pitts led the Warrior ground game with four carries for 71 yards. Bruening rushed 14 times for 52 yards. Matt Petersen picked up 19 yards on seven carries, Connor McCormick picked up 14 yards on three carries and Zach Kasten rushed twice for 13 yards.

Travis Frank led the Warrior defense with six tackles and two QB sacks. Goergen had eight tackles, Zach Kasten had seven tackles, McCormick and Jared Hegge had four tackles and Buttell, Brett Colsch, Petersen, Collin Coffield, Jeremy DeWall and Alex Betz each had three tackles.

The Warriors host a tough Chatfield team this Friday night.
