For the fourth straight year the Caledonia Warriors football team has won the Section 1AA Championship and will advance to the State Class AA Tournament.

The Warriors topped Zumbrota-Mazeppa 17-0 before a very large crowd at Caledonia Friday night. The Warriors were the #1 seeded team, while Z-M was seeded #2 in the section.

The Warriors (11-0) will now face Section 3 champion Luverne (9-2) at RCTC for a 7 p.m. state quarterfinal game.

A hard-fought game

The section championship game was a hard-fought affair, with the Warriors scoring two TDs in the second period and adding a field goal in the final frame for the 17-0 score.

Following a scoreless first period, the Warriors got on the board in the second, thanks to two long drives of 92 and 45 yards. Connor McCormick pushed in from three yards out for the first Warrior TD. The Austin Goergen kick was good and Caledonia had a 7-0 lead.

Josh Gran found Luke Lampert open for a nine-yard TD pass to cap the Warriors’ second long drive. The Goergen kick was once again good and the Warriors took a 14-0 lead into the half.

Goal line stand

Z-M Wasn’t about to roll over and play dead. Following a long drive they set up shop with a first and goal inside the Warrior five yard line. On a second and goal from the one the Cougars tried a quarterback sneak, which was snuffed out by Teddy Barthel and a host of other Warrior defenders. Two Z-M penalties (for a false start and a delay of game) pushed the Cougars back to a fourth and goal from the 11 yard line. Z-M attempted a pass play which was intercepted by Luke Lampert, ending the Cougars’ scoring chance.

Goergen nailed a 26-yard field goal in the fourth period for the 17-point Caledonia total.

Offensive stats

The Warriors racked up 314 yards of offense (160 yards rushing  and 154 yards passing) while holding the Cougars to 51 yards rushing and 152 yards passing.

Ivan Augedahl led the Warrior ground game with 100 yards on 18 carries. McCormick picked up 27 yards and a TD on 10 carries. Gran had 18 yards on six carries and Seth Kasten had 15 yards on six carries.

Gran completed seven of 15 passes for 154 yards and one TD.

Luke Lampert had five catches for 70 yards and one TD. Travis Frank had one catch for 47 yards and Seth Kasten had one catch for 37 yards.

Defensive stats

Zach Lechner led the defensive charge with nine tackles. Jim Costigan, Frank and Goergen each had eight tackles. Ethan Lapham had seven, Gran had six, Augedahl had four, Lampert had two with in interception and McCormick had two tackles with an interception. Mitch Reiser, Jared Hegge and Cody Colsch each had two tackles and Houston Halverson, Kennan Bruening, Brent Colsch, Seth Kasten, Zach Kasten, Lyndon Becker, Barthel and Alex Betz each had one tackle.
